I cannot stand Julie Powell, and I cannot stand people who cheat on their partners. I get so frustrated with this kind of thing, that i just cannot finish the book. Butcher stories are fun, though. Good to see you back.

I keep trying to remember or find which Erma Bombeck book had a chapter in it which described how eventually the daughter becomes like the mother to her mother. Would you know which of her books that was in?

I think that if you’re comfortable, or even enjoy, disliking the protagonist, then it’s definitely worth a read. While I don’t like Julie very much by the end of the book, I have to admire her unflinching honesty. This doesn’t always make for a pleasant read, but it’s certainly interesting. I was never bored.

I should reiterate, though, that a large portion of the book is spent discussing very specific butchering techniques. As an amateur cook and meat-lover, I found this fascinating, but I can see where a lot of people wouldn’t.

Thanks for the review of Julie Powell’s new book. I too enjoyed “Julie & Julia – the movie” more than I enjoyed “Julie & Julia – the book”. Julie simply isn’t likeable.

As much as I hate to admit it, I often enjoy reading memoirs by people who I just don’t like. Julie certainly fits the bill, and based on your review that she embarks on an extra-marital affair, I’m definitely intriuged by this book. Is it worthy my time?

Haha, I do that, too. Maybe not before EVERY book, but I definitely went through the Harry Potter boxed set before the last one was released. I’m really excited about the prequel, too, though I’m going to try to save it. I’m flying to Madrid in August, and it would be perfect plane reading.

I’m so glad you reviewed this book. I read it awhile ago and loved it. I had no idea that there was a prequel coming out though. Now I have something to look forward to… and an excuse to reread the book. (I can’t help it, I have to reread all books in a series before the next one comes out. So yes, I have read the first Harry Potter book seven times!)

Not so much. Someone told me the other day, though, that Grisham’s novel, A Painted House, about growing up in rural Arkansas was really good. I might have to check that out.
